It’s an exciting time for us at Fearless and Far. Right now, I’m prepping for my upcoming trip to Benin, Nigeria, and Cameroon in West Africa. I’ll be visiting pygmies who sharpen their teeth, bare-knuckle boxing in Nigeria, and even diving into the rituals and mysticism of voodoo. It’s going to be a fun time! But while I’ve been planning, I’ve also been thinking about an interesting concept I’d like to share with you.
It's called Watiko. It’s a Native American idea that there’s a spirit inside each of us that serves as an alter ego that holds us back from living the life we’re supposed to live. It’s a saboteur. Whenever you’re put in a situation where you need to take action, it makes you procrastinate. When you need to grow, it makes you stagnate. It makes bad choices. It’s similar to another idea called “the resistance.” You can read more about it in a book called The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. It focuses on the resistance that tries to hold us back when we do important, meaningful work and how to break through those barriers. At its core, it’s not a fear of failure. It’s a fear of success. It’s the limiting beliefs we put on ourselves and what we’re capable of. Watiko, a.k.a. the resistance, is present in all of us, whether we realize it or not. Instead of working out, we sit on the couch and binge Netflix. Instead of dating someone who deserves us, we go back to the same type of person who’s always been wrong for us. Instead of going after that dream job, we settle for a safe, mundane career that brings us no joy or happiness. We see Watiko in public figures, too. President Bill Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinsky. The infamous Will Smith slap at the Oscars. Christian Bale’s blowout fight with his mother in a London hotel. These are all examples of how we sabotage ourselves if we’re not careful. And the more recognize it and see it as a character in your life, the more you can have a relationship with it and work against it. But first, you have to admit that it’s there. |
